Economy
- Real GDP growth:
- The second quarter growth rate of gross domestic product in 2006 has increased by 20.4% to 132 652 million New Turkish Liras in current prices when gross domestic product has increased by 13.3% to 91 470 million USA dollar.
- The second quarter growth rate of gross domestic product in 2006 has increased by 7.5% to 37.3 million New Turkish Liras in constant prices.
- Inflation rate:
- Monthly change in CPI was realised by 1,29%.
- A rise in general indices was realised in the 2003=100 based Consumer Price Index on the previous month by 1,29%, on December of the previous year by 6,65%, on same month of the previous year by 10,55% and on the twelve months moving averages basis by 9,05% in September 2006.
- Trends: Economic policy outlook: The government's commitment to privatisation has been maintained. In August the government officially confirmed its decision to sell by block sale its 100% stake in the restructured Halkbank, Turkey's sixth-largest bank in terms of assets. The deadline for completion is May 25th 2008.
- Economic forecast: : Economic growth has been strong so far in 2006, but a weakening of the lira in May-June, accompanied by higher inflation and sharp tightening of monetary policy by the Central Bank of Turkey, will lead to a slowdown in the second half of 2006 and the first half of 2007. GDP growth is forecast to be 5.5% in 2006 and about 4.5% in 2007. The softer lira and weaker domestic demand will help to lower the current-account deficit slightly in 2007. Second-quarter GDP growth was stronger than expected, so this has raised growth forecasts to 5.5% in 2006 and 4.5% in 2007 (4.5% and 4% previously). Also revised down end-2006 consumer price inflation forecast to 10.1% (previously 10.6%), owing to better than expected data in August. It’s continued to expect further lira volatility towards the end of 2006 to put renewed upward pressure on prices.

- Prime Minister: Recep Tayyip Erdogan
- Changes over the last 12 months: In September the parliament approved a motion to send Turkish forces to Lebanon as part of the international peacekeeping mission, despite strong public and political opposition. This might damage support for the AKP in the run-up to the general election due to be held by November 2007.
- Major issues on the agenda: Integration to EU, and criteria to be met are on the agenda. For the time being the issues with Cyprus and Human rights will remain. A potential movement for domestic agenda might be the next presidential and legislative elections in 2007.
