Politics

  • Major issues on the agenda:
    • Reduction of V/Leave (no additional V/L for public holidays falling on Sat & Sun)
    • Eco-tax on plastic bags, IT equipment, batteries……. (on all non-degradable products)

Labour market

  • Employment rate: 54.0% (Labour Force Survey July – Sept 2004)
  • Unemployment rate: 7.3% (LFS July – Sept 2004)
  • Job growth: 1.4% (increase calculated Sept 2004 over Sept 2003 employed from LFS)
  • Skills shortages: Form work erectors in the construction industry mainly due to conditions of work
  • Rate of pay increases: Definition required (according to LFS the average annual salary in Sept 2004 was 0.42% less than in Sept 2003 but this could be way off what is being requested)
